The Trade Effects Of Endogenous Preferential Trade Agreements

11 Oct The Trade Effects Of Endogenous Preferential Trade Agreements

Keywords: Gravity model, endogenous preferential adherence to trade agreement, Estimation of the probability of poisson pseudomaximum with endogenous binary indicator variables Recent work by Anderson and van Wincoop (2003) establishes an empirical modelling strategy that fully takes into account the nonlinear structural effects of trade barriers on trade in new trade theory models. New models of trade theory have never been used to assess and quantify the role of endogenous adherence to the Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) in a manner consistent with general equilibrium. Beyond this gap, this paper aims to provide an empirical model that takes into account both the fact that accession to preferential trade agreements is endogenous and that the global matrix of bilateral trade flows contains many zero entries. These characteristics are largely addressed in the empirical model by estimating (perhaps in two parts) the probability of Poisson pseudomaximum, with endogenous binary indicator variables.
